He went to Chester High School, was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and graduated from Rutland Business College.
He was employed at Bryant Grinder for 20 years and retired from Crawford Electric in Chester.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Moose club.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Phoebe (Lynch) Barnes; six children, Lewis Barnes, Timothy, Kathleen Gardner, Kevin, Richard and Julieann Hoy; a sister, Shirley Hale; and twelve grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Matthew Barnes.
The graveside service will be in Heald Cemetery in Andover. A reception will follow at Horseshoe Acres Campground in Andover.
