Abar, Dr. Joan Libutti, 90, died November 30, 2021.
Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Stacia (Klimasiewski) Libutti.
For 53 years, she was married to the late Dr. J. Weston Abar.
Joan began her career singing and dancing at the age of 3 on stage and on the radio. She accompanied Governor Vanderbilt on his campaign in 1938, singing in Italian, Polish and English.
After working the soda fountain in the family pharmacy in Olneyville, she set her sights on becoming a pharmacist, graduating from the University of Rhode Island in 1952. Following this, Joan aspired to become a physician and graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1963 and later earned a certificate in Nuclear Medicine at the Cleveland Institute. She interned at the former Cranston General Hospital and ultimately became Chief of Staff.
Her accolades are many, Joan was the first female hospital Chief of Staff in Rhode Island, was named Top 10 Businesswomen in RI and was the recipient of the American Osteopathic Hospital Association Award of Merit.
She was also very active in the community, serving on several boards, promoting the danger of smoking through the "tar wars" program and raising oysters for research to help clean the bay.
An avid traveler, Joan visited almost every national park in the U.S. in a motor home with her husband Jean.
She is survived by a brother, a sister, and many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
