"Obit---published in The Sentinel of August 1, 1882

Capt. Samuel B. Gardner of this county, who for several years has
been in poor health, died at the residence of Mr. Adam Bear, near
Elkton station on S.V.R.R.(Shenandoah Valley Railroad) in
Rockingham County at 4 o'clock, Saturday morning last in his 69th
year, surrounded by his family and friends. The deceased was in
every sense a gentleman and his death is mourned by all who knew
him. Possessed of large means, he ministered to the poor in their
necessities, [illegible] and was ever open to all comers. His death
makes a void in the family and social circles that cannot be filled. [he
is to be buried] in Prospect Hill Cemetery attesting the esteem in
which he was held by those who knew him. The services [illegible]
