J. L. Daniels is
Claimed by Death
Monday Evening

J. L. Daniels, 76, died early Monday evening at his home here where he had been critically ill for some weeks.

Mrs. Daniels was widely known not only in this section but over Milam county and in parts of central and south Texas, having been a salesman of well known products for years and for the past fifteen years he had been engaged in writing insurance. He had been a resident of Rockdale for thirty-four years.

J. L. Daniels was born near Pine Bluff, Arkansas, October 6, 1871. He came to Texas in 1895 and soon after met Miss Jessie Locklin of San Gabriel, a member of an old Milam county family, whom he married on April 29, 1897. Just one year ago the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary by holding open-house to their legion of friends.

Since suffering a stroke last year, Mrs. Daniels had retired from active work but until his recent illness it was his custom to make daily walks to the business section to do shopping, and in his genial manner tarry for a chat with friends.

Mr. Daniels was an unusually thoughtful and considerate person who went out of his way to do things for others and who carried a sizable share of the troubles of those close to him. He was especially fond of children and was never so busy but what he could take time to enter into conversation with them.

Mr. Daniels had been a member of the Baptist church since a young man and remained a faithful attendant until his health would not permit. It was brought out at the service that he had given thought to his passing away in recent months, and in talking to a friend of long standing, Rev. O. J. Morgan, he had requested that he conduct the service.

The funeral service was held from the chapel of Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon when Rev. Frank Tulloch of the First Baptist church officiated with REv. Morgan. Burial was in the I. O. O. F. Cemetery.

The casket was surrounded by an embankment of beautiful floral tributes. Pallbearers were B. Regenbrecht, C. E. Prewitt, Jim Eads, H. J. Stone, Claud Aldridge of Smithville, Earl Stubbs of Georgetown.

There survives the wife, a son Newton Daniels, four grandsons, Edward Jr., and Rex Bartlett, who were reared in the home, Ben Erle and Newton Ray Daniels, a granddaughter, Eileen Daniels, and a great-granddaughter, Nedra Frances Bartlett, all of Rockdale.

An only daughter, Mrs. Thelma Smith, passed away two years ago; there are also two brothers, Lon Daniels of Emerson, Arkansas, and Ben Daniels of Pine Bluff, Ark., the latter being present for the service.
