George Berry Dead

George Franklin Berry, retired city tax assessor, seventy nine, died at the Memorial hospital, at 8:45 a.m., Saturday. The seventy nine year old man had been in declining health for the past two years, but his condition did not become serious until several weeks ago. For the past several days he had been in a critical condition and it was apparent that he could not long survive.

George, as he was universally known, was born and had spent all of his live in Barton county. He was born on February 12, 1884, the son of Alfred Berry and Sarah Arner Berry.

He was married to Miss Myrtle Cline at the Bethel Church on January 11, 1905. The couple engaged in farming following their marriage for a good many years. However as their large and growing family began to reach high school age they moved into Lamar thirty eight years ago, in order to give the children more advantages.

On coming to Lamar the deceased engaged in various sorts of labor, nothing was too hard or physically demanding to be undertaken for the sake of his children. In 1938 he was elected on the Republican ticket as city tax assessor. He held the job for twenty two consecutive years, almost always endorsed by the Democrats and running without opposition. He retired voluntarily as a candidate in 1960.

His long tenure in the job bespoke of the great confidence Lamar people had in his ability to handle the job and in his sense of fairness.

He was a genial man, who liked to visit with his friends and acquaintances and an unusually devoted husband and father. He attended the old Lamar college in his youth and was an active member in the First Baptist church of Lamar.

He leaves his wife with two sons, Marion Berry, of Topeka, George Berry Jr., of St. Louis and five daughters, Mrs. Vera Dalton and Mrs. Nadene Blanchard of Lamar, Mrs. Lorene Reeder, of Pittsburg, Mrs. Jean Crockett of Liberal, and Mrs. Millie Beth Birkenbach of La Mesa, California. Two daughters preceded him in death. One brother, Herbert Berry of Highland Springs, Virginia, two sisters, Mrs. Maude Perry of Lamar and Mrs. Frona Melton of Dallas, thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren, also survive.

The body was taken to the Chiles funeral home to be prepared for burial. The last rites were set for 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Chiles Chapel. Interment follows in Lake Cemetery.
