Longtime Seminole resident Gloria "June" Russell passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, in Seminole at the age of 75.June was born Aug. 18, 1932, in Shawnee to Troy and Sadie (Jordan) Yoder.
She was a graduate of Shawnee High School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she sang in the church choir and in the past years had taught Sunday School. She was a Choctaw Tribal Member and was very proud of her Choctaw heritage. June loved the sport of baseball and when her children were young, she was a little league baseball coach. Some of her hobbies were playing Canasta with her girlfriends, going to dances with friends and working with Marie Dawson at auctions.
She worked for Southwestern Bell and also was a nurse for many years for Dr. Jack Parrish, Dr. Dennis Ang, Dr. Sudhir Gupta and Dr. Brendan Okeeffe. Her passion for nursing was an influence to her grandson, Andrew, to pursue a career in medicine. He attends Indiana School of Medicine in Muncie, Ind., studying to be a surgeon. Her sense of humor and zest for life were infectious to all around her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Sadie Yoder; son, Pat Russell; and brother, Dale Yoder.
She is survived by her son, Mike Russell of Greenbrier, Ark.; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Rick Conner of Seminole; sister-in-law, Wanda Yoder; nieces, Rena Goldenstein, and Daleda Waldrup and husband, Greg, all of Shawnee; three grandchildren, Lyndsey Russell and husband, John Powell, of Blanchard, Okla., Andrew Conner of Muncie, Ind., and Caley Conner of Seminole. She is also survived by a host of other family and loving friends. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Tommy Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Seminole.
Pallbearers will be, Danny Lynn Jordan, Derl Williams, Webber Crow, Randy Milam, Gene Knight and Jake Knight.
Honorary pallbearers will be, George Richards, Ken Colvin and Roy Gurley.
The family would like to say a special thanks to the Dr. Tony Haddad and the ICU nursing staff at Unity North Hospital in Shawnee, Grace Lankford, Lori Blackwell, Carol Williams, Shirley Castle, Jennifer Lemons, and Loving Care Hospice for all the love and care they have provided to June.
