CATHERINE M. "KITTY" REDDY LEWIS was the daughter of Irish parents: ROSE LARKIN and JOHN REDDY (JOHN died in Ireland, no burial records for him in Michigan). She was born in Ireland not far north of Dublin in a coastal village called Balbriggan and her mother tongue was Gaelic.

In 1882 at age 7 she immigrated with her widowed mother ROSE from Ireland to Michigan. There she and her mother lived on a farm with ROSE'S sister MARY ANN LARKIN PATTON and her husband JAMES PATTON in Calhoun Co., near Albion.

CATHERINE, known as KITTY, was raised in the home of the PATTONS while growing up and sometimes used their last name to honor them. She was married as CATHERINE M. PATTON. She also passed it along to her only son, JAMES PATTON LEWIS (1900-1957). He in turn passed it on to his first son, JAMES PATTON "JIMMY" LEWIS (1958-1974).

In 1893 at age 17 she married a 28 year old neighbor, HOMER AUSTIN LEWIS. Like KITTY, HOMER had also lost a parent at a young age and was raised in the home of relatives. Around 1910-1912 they moved west to Oregon where HOMER worked for many years at the stockyards in Portland. They made their home in the Kenton district of NE Portland at 2036 Farragut St.

Although KITTY left school after the seventh grade (for unknown reasons) she had an inquiring mind that seems to have always been on the lookout for new experiences and information. Her grandchildren remember her as the adult in their lives who would take them by streetcar to downtown Portland to see or experience whatever was going on, such as the visit of Old Ironsides or a parade, museum, etc. She and HOMER valued education and encouraged their children and grandchildren to stay in school.

They also owned and spent as much time as possible at a beach cabin in what is now Lincoln City, OR. There they entertained their children, grandchildren, and other family and friends each summer. HOMER sold the cabin after CATHERINE'S death in 1940.

Their known children:

1) Mary Marna LEWIS WHITE (1895-1965).

2) James Patton LEWIS (1900-1957).
