After completing his high school education in Bethesday, MD, Jack received his AB in Biology in 1958 from Harvard College. After three years in the U.S. Navy, he pursued his doctorate in Zoology at Duke University.
Dr. Hailman continued post-doctoral studies at the University of Tubingen in Germany and the Institute of Animal Behavior in Newark, NJ. He then began a long teaching career at the University of Maryland and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, retiring in 1999.
After retirement he was active as a Research Associate in the Avian Ecology Program at Archbold Biological Station in Lake Placid, FL. He also edited a newsletter helping to mountain trails, and volunteered with the Bureau of Land Management, doing biological surveys. During his lifetime he published several book in both scientific and non-scientific fields.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, two sons and five grandchildren.
