In 1860, he was a student presumably living in Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found with certainty in that census. He stood 5' 9" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg June 17, 1863, in the face of an impending crisis (resulting in the battle of Gettysburg), mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 20 as a private with Co. A, 26th Pennsylvania Emergency Infantry Militia, and honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1863. He also served as a private with Sanno's Independent Cavalry Militia July 14 - October 29, 1864, when Confederate forces again threatened Pennsylvania (and burned Chambersburg). Please note that the "border guard" unit mentioned in the accompanying history was, at best, an informally organized - if organized at all - collection of men doing what they felt was necessary.

He married Amelia Caroline "Carrie" Van Patten August 25, 1868, in Gettysburg, Adams County, and fathered William (b. 04/23/70), Edwin Parson (b. 12/09/71), John Paul (b. 04/28/73), Mary H. (b. 04/07/75), Charles Van Patten (b. 11/30/76), George Harper (b. 01/13/78), Carrie Van Patten (b. 03/06/80), and Ruth Young Allen (b. 03/30/82). Cause of death is listed as "myocarditis "chronic" [and] interstitial nephritis." According to his death certificate, his wife's name was "Katherine," which appears to be a clerical error.
