John's parents and siblings lived in Iowa in 1882 and John had came to Oregon a few years earlier.
Robertson, Iowa Dec 21st 1882
John Harrison Esq.
Dear Sir,
By request of your parents I write you this sad (illegible) of your little sisters death. Dear Lillie was taken sick Sunday morning Dec 17th at four o'clock - and died Tuesday morning at six o'clock. She was taken (illegible) and everything that could be thought of was done for her relief, but she gradually grew worse. Sunday night Dr Polter was sent for, but not being home at the time, did not get here until Monday. He pronounced her decline--Scarlet Fever in the most malignant form. She was miserable from the start, and suffered untold agony. The funeral will be at home tomorrow Dec 21st.
This is a sad blow to her relatives, as well as friends, for she was beloved by all who knew her. I have lived in the family a little over two years and I thought all the world of her, but such is life.
Your parents will write you soon.
Yours very truly,
J S Manning
P. S. Lillie died on her birthday, she was nine years old, Enclosed find a piece of her Scroud and Trimmings.
