Dr. James P. Barayasarra of Easton, MD, born May 1, 1935, in Bengochea's Hotel of Mtn. Home, ID. Passed away on May 24, 2022, Easton MD.
James graduated high school from Meridian, ID. Then, after a year in a Seminary, he transferred to the College of Idaho, Caldwell, ID. where he received a BS (biology) and a M.Ed. (education) He also received a M. NS (natural science) from the Univ. of Idaho at Moscow, ID. And a PhD (biology) from St. Bonaventure University, NY. He has over 30 hours credit in art, theater, and creative writing.
He taught high school in Idaho and Nevada for 13 years prior to his doctorate and two years at SUNY Ag and Tech at Alfred New York and 25 years at Chesapeake College in Maryland, where he retired as Professor Emeritus.
At the College of Idaho, he participated on the 1957 and 1959 Field Biology Expeditions throughout Mexico and southwestern United States Two high lights from these trips were a hike across Grand Canyon and a lifelong friend, Dr. Robert Bratz.
At Chesapeake College he was the founding advisor of UHURU, the Black Student Union including creator of the club logo. Not only is he proud of his Basque heritage, but also of the acceptance and confidence of minority students.
James wrote ten unpublished plays, one of which was produced on stage. His family history and personal memoirs won second place at the Basque Center Studies 2018 Literary contest at the Univ. of Nevada, Reno. Zazpi Gurdi eta Erdi or "Seven Wagons and a Half"
He was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, active in Idaho before graduate school and regrets his inactivity since.
He was predeceased by his parents, Nemesio and Maria Carmen Victorina and his siblings: Louis John, Mary Felipa, Alva, Frank, Michael David, and Manual, also sister- in- law, Cathy Barayasarra
He married Marian Janet Anchustegui of Shoshone, Idaho in 1961 who survives, as do the following children: Abdellatif Louis (Mina) Chafik of Morocco; Christina Marie (Vincent Sr) Baire of Olean, NY; Lisa Marie (Alan) Whittaker of East Amherst, NY; Mary Ann (Douglas) Besser of Pittsburgh, PA. Grandchildren are Jacob and Jillian Chafik; Marouane Chafik, Fadi Chafik, Hind Chafik of Morocco; Justina and Vincent Jr Baire; Quinn, Zachary, and Alyssa Whittaker; Christopher, Nicholas, Michael, and Sarah Besser. Great grandchildren; Anthony Matthew Baire and Eden Chafik. Nephew; Michael Barayasarra and very special niece Victorina (Lou) Murgoitio and grand nephews; Lukas, Jacob, and Mitchel Murgoitio.
