Charlie Dwight Campbell , age 82, of Love Road, Claremont, N.C., passed away Sunday, October 08, 2006, at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory after a lengthy illness.

Born May 4, 1924 in Butler, Tenn., he was the son of the late Dewey Harrison Campbell and the late Rilda Tester Campbell .

Charlie served honorably in the U.S. Army from April 1943 to January 1946, where he was a highly decorated Sergeant in the Medical Corps. He then went to work for Southern Railway, where he was employed for 34 years before retiring.

In his spare time, Charlie enjoyed listening to bluegrass music, watching Atlanta Braves baseball (as well as all sports), and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Prior to his illness, his hobbies included traveling to bluegrass festivals, fishing, landscaping, and woodworking/woodcutting. He practically built his own home from the old Granite Falls Railroad depot. His true passion was the mountains, as he was an avid mountain man.

In addition to his parents, a brother, Cloe Campbell , of Tennessee; a sister, Lettie Evans, of Tennessee; and his first wife, Rachel Ball Campbell , of Spartanburg, S.C., preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Reid Campbell , of Claremont, N.C.; daughter, Ellen Mae Simpson, of Hickory, N.C.; stepson, Chris Cheek and wife, Cindy, of Taylorsville, N.C.; stepdaughter, Carla Cheek Draughn and husband, Pat, of Valdese, N.C.; five grandchildren, Eric Simpson and wife, Lindsey, of Conover, N.C.; Kristi Simpson-Harden and husband, Mark, of Greensboro, N.C.; Jessica Cheek, of Hickory, N.C.; Jenna Cheek, of Raleigh, N.C.; Sarah Cheek, of Taylorsville, N.C.; five brothers, Clifford Campbell and wife Mabel, Clyde Campbell and wife Dale, Carl Campbell , Clay Campbell and wife Diane, Claude Campbell and wife Betty, all of Spartanburg, S.C.; two sisters: Lena Campbell McMahan and Lora Mae Campbell Valentine, both of Newport, Tenn. A number of beloved nieces and nephews

A Celebration of Life Service and Dinner was held on Monday, October 9, 2006. at 5:00 p.m. in the Family Life Building of Bethel United Church of Christ in Mountain View, N.C.
