Richard Cansler, Sr.
January 21, 1942 - May 9, 2022
Charlotte, North Carolina - Richard Lee Cansler Sr., 80, died Monday, May 9, 2022.
Richard was born on January 21, 1942, in Hickory, NC, the son of John Henry and Rosa Morrow Cansler. He graduated from Hickory High School in 1960 before earning bachelor's and master's degrees from Appalachian State Teachers College and completing postgraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
In 1964 Richard moved to Charlotte, where he worked in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for 30 years. He began his career at North Mecklenburg High School and later served as principal of Garinger High School, West Charlotte High School, and the Morgan School. He took a special interest in student leadership, serving 15 years on the board of the North Carolina Association of Student Councils. After retiring from the school system, Richard pursued a second career in real estate.
He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church for more than 50 years. Richard was a man of deep faith and was devoted to the church's mission. He performed many lay duties at St. Mark's, serving on church council and many committees.
Richard was fond of his frequent encounters with former students, who would sometimes approach him sheepishly with tales of youthful misdeeds and trips to the principal's office. He had great affection for animals and was well loved by neighborhood dogs and cats. He had a keen interest in British history and was a tireless traveler. In retirement he completed his goal of visiting all 50 states.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Millie Barton Cansler; son Richard Cansler Jr. and wife, Lou, of Raleigh; son Clay Cansler and wife, Upma Singh, of Philadelphia; sister Denna Baucom and husband, Donald, of Boone; and step-granddaughter, Reynolds Dement, of Apex. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters, John, Martha, Doris, Robert, James, and Ann.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1001 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC, 28207. Mask wearing is optional. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
