Bette McCall Miller, 77, went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ and reunited with many loved ones on May 7, 2022. Bette was born on December 11, 1944, in Longview, Texas, to Abner Vernon McCall and Frances Laura Bortle. She grew up in Waco, residing virtually in the shadow of her beloved Baylor University in her early childhood.

Bette attended public schools in Waco, graduating in 1963 near the top of her class at Waco High. She won national honors in debate and extemporaneous speaking and was chosen to represent Waco High at Girls State. She was honored by the young women there to represent Texas at Girls Nation.

Following graduation from Waco High, Bette eagerly enrolled at Baylor, her four years there highlighted by being president of then Alpha Omega sorority, now Pi Beta Phi. She pursued a double major in German and history, obtaining a BA with honors in 1967. She continued her education at the University of Texas and was awarded her MA in German in 1973.

Bette and her husband, Paul, married on March 5, 1998, and built their home in 2008 on Lake Bob Sandlin near Pittsburg, Texas, and were devoted to each other until her death.

Bette was a forty-year educator, cherished by her students at Highland Park and Woodrow Wilson High Schools in Dallas, and the last five years at Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant, Texas. She was a devout Christian and a Bible scholar and taught adult Sunday School wherever she was residing. Her passions included Bible study, genealogy, all things Baylor as an active alumna, reading non-fiction, camping and fishing, traveling to Germany with students, and being with her family and friends.

Bette was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Jerry Roeder; her children, James Jeffrey Martin and Richard Scott Roeder Martin; and her second husband, James Dwayne Martin.

Bette is survived by her husband, Paul Edward Miller; brother, Richard V. (Dick) McCall and wife, Jill; sisters: Anne Schell and husband, Allen Chroman and Kathleen Sigtenhorst and husband, Pieter; nephews, Mike Schell, Harvey McCall and Christopher Bruner; and nieces: Laura McCall Lacy, Lauren Chroman and Petra Sigtenhorst; great nephews: Lane Scott Lacy and Luke McCall Lacy; great nieces; Hanna Marschell, Abbi Marschell, Marcy Gayle McCall and Emilia Marie McCall, and extended family: Nancy and Dan Chapman and Tom Letbetter.
