MARGARET MONTEITH EDELMAN

Margaret Monteith Edelman, aged 97 years, passed away at home on November 24, 2021. She was born to Charles Duncan Monteith and Alice Boles Monteith on June 9, 1924 in Modesto, California. She graduated from Cornell University with a degree in mathematics in 1945 and married her spouse, John Arnold Edelman that same year. They enjoyed almost 76 years of marriage and raised four children together: Nancy Edelman, John Duncan Edelman, Richard Edelman (Jennifer King Edelman), and Peter Edelman. Once her children were in school Margaret began her career as a mathematics teacher for Fairfax County Schools. She subsequently obtained her Masters of Education from George Mason University in 1976 and began working as a guidance counselor at Groveton High School. In 1983 she became a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia and began a private psychotherapy practice which she continued into her nineties. Margaret was truly the loving center of her extended family and was blessed with five grandchildren: Emily Edelman, Ariel Neal, Krista Edelman, MD, Anna Edelman, and John Scot Edelman. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Luke Cowardin, Brendan Bulea, Darwin Bulea, and Addie Kate Cowardin. Margaret's longevity may be partially attributed to her healthy lifestyle, practicing yoga, skiing, and playing tennis into her senior years. She was an advocate for social justice and active in her local Democratic party. Additionally, Margaret was a founding member of Mt. Vernon at Home, a senior aging in place cooperative. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Margaret's caregivers in her later years, Kate, Christina, and Joyce. Funeral preparations are being handled by Cunningham and Torch Funeral Home in Alexandria. A memorial service will be scheduled at a future date. Margaret bequeaths a legacy of love, compassion, and wisdom and her memory will be cherished for generations.
