Goldman Glen Cothren was born in Higden, Arkansas in his grandparents' log cabin on February 16, 1929. His family was living in Oklahoma at the time, but his Mom traveled by train to be with her own mother to have her baby. The train passed through Fort Smith, Arkansas on the way and seeing the Goldman Hotel must have made an impression on Dorothy because she named her 2nd son Goldman. In our eyes, he's always lived up to his name.

This past year Dad was gradually losing strength. On Dec 31st he had emergency surgery to remove his gallbladder. After one energetic attempt to get home and finish some final business, he begin a quick decline and told his doctor and all of us that he was done, and wanted no more medical intervention. His wishes were granted and he passed away at home in Yreka, with family and hospice support on January 29th, 2022; barely a month after he decided he was finished with this life, and just a few weeks short of his 93rd birthday.

We feel in the big picture, he was a very fortunate man.

A bit of history:
Goldman was working for his Dad driving truck by the time he was 14. It was the time of World War II so filling a job was a priority, and Dad was too young to enlist. We feel his 8th grade education was probably the equal to today's high school diploma. He learned beautiful penmanship, so we know he was attentive to some lessons, for sure. He didn't have degree, but our Dad sure knew how to do most everything that needed to be done. Whatever he set his mind to do; wood working, building a mobile home park or a garbage business, masonry, truck driving, equipment operator, timber cruising, plywood making, landscaping or gardening, he just got things done. He was particular about keeping things tidy and in good shape, so lots of work went into any home or property he owned.

Dad met our Mom, Betty, in Heber Springs, Arkansas. They were married in June 1946. Ron and Judy were born in Arkansas, and then they moved to San Diego. Beverly and Kevin were born in San Diego. After they moved to Brookings, OR, Kim was born. As you would know, these bare facts cover endless stories of love, grief, wonder, joy and discovery that we will always treasure.

It was while they lived in San Diego that Mom and Dad found a deeper need for their souls and were drawn to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. Gladys Porteous and Evelyn Gerlund were the first ministers that helped them and there is a longer, precious story of our folks embracing truth and becoming a part of God's great family. This choice to serve God was to be the guiding force for the rest of their lives.

In 2014, after 68 years of marriage and much living, Betty passed away at age 86. Dad lovingly cared for her almost completely on his own for the last 4 months of her life.

The folks were winter Texans for over 20 years and cherished their winter circle of friends. There was warm sun and endless social activities to enjoy along with many Christian fellowship privileges.

The Andrews were also winter Texans, and after both Dad and Joanne had lost their spouses, they ended up in Texas alone, and found they were a very compatible couple. They were married in May 2017. We are grateful that we have had Joanne for an addition to our family and that she has been such a happy, positive influence for Dad. On the days when Dad was so low in energy that he felt he could not make it to the fellowship meeting, Joanne was an encouragement. Dad would go anyway and then express how thankful he was to be there and that the effort was worth the reward of inspiration and love he gained for being in God's presence. They made each other happy, and that made our family very happy.

Goldman is survived by his wife Joanne Andrews Cothren, his sisters, Connie Lyn and Shelby Morton of Heber Springs, AR, his 4 children, 4 step children, their spouses, combined 27 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by our Mom, Betty, his daughter, Judy and his two brothers, Buddy and Gly.
