Harry S. Phillips. 76, of 317 Pleasant street, died Wednesday evening [26 Nov 1947] at Putnam Memorial bospital after a long illness. He been a patient at the hospital since last July and has been visited by many of his friends, who will regret to learn of his passing.

Mr, Phillips was born at North Bennington on Aug. 14, 1871. the son of Charles D. and Sabra Gould Phillips. He was educated at the North Bennington Graded school and high school and after several years engaged in varied employment in Harriman, Tennessee and Troy, N. Y., he married Harriet Louise Kehoe of Bennington in 1899. He became employed ns bookkeeper by the H. T. Cushman Manufacturing Company of North Bennington, where he continued faithfully for a period of about 20 years.

in 1918. he moved with his family to Bennington, where he had since been employed as head bookkeeper and later as vice-president and treasurer of the Charles Cooper Company, Inc.

From the time he was a young man and throughout his business career, he was intensely interested in music and became a proficient Pianist. He taught music on the piano for many years and also acted as organist for the North Bennington Congregational church and the Bennington Baptist church for a considerable period of time.

His other interests, dating from his youth, included baseball. In this sport, he became well known locally for his pitching ability and was often seen on the mound in the contest of the local ball clubs of that time. All his life was an ardent trout fisherman and spent many pleasant and profitable hours on the banks of the Battenkill.

His extremely friendly attitude and disposition made for him a host of sincere friends in both villages, through his many contacts in the business, music and sports worlds. He always had a cheerful greeting for everyone and will long be remembered by many.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Myra P. Endress of North Bennington; one daughter, Marian, Mrs. Hubert Scott of Bennington; one son. Frederick Phillips of Pelham, N. Y. and a granddaughter, Diana L. Scott of this village.

The funeral will be held from his late home, 317 Pleasant street, on Saturday at 2:30 p. m. The Rev. George Heald will officiate. Interment will be at Pork Lawn cemetery.
