JAY MARKLE was born as SAMUEL GARDNER

BURIED WITH MILITARY HONORS
Was Sheriff and Mayor of Urich

Jay's mother died 1904
His adoptive mother became too ill to care for him, or died, in 1908

Born in Urich
Son of Elzie Gardner and Margaret "Maggie" McAtee (from Lexington IL)
Adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Markle abt 1904
m: LeVaude Harness Apr 24 1924 in Kansas City
ch: Wanda Sue (m: Roland Ward Doty in 1957)

Notes from "A History of Urich and Community": Jay's mother died in 1903 and Jay and his sister, Fay, were adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Charley Markle of Clinton MO. His foster mother's health failed in 1908 and Jay moved back to Urich where he was reared by his half brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. George Wick. In 1916 he moved to California to join his father, brother and sisters in Los Angeles.

Enlisted in the Navy in WWI and was stationed in San Pedro, CA. He was at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, NY, awaiting ship when the war ended.

After his discharge from the Navy, Jay returned to Urich and began a successful dray business. Jay and his employee, Joe Thurston, unloaded from railroad cars and hauled to the building site all of the cement, sand, brick and lumber for the Urich Elementary School.

He was elected Sheriff of Henry County in 1924 and served for four years. He then was District Sales Representative of the Standard Oil Co. for about 20 years.

Jay was an avid baseball fan, following major league activities and he and LeVaude attended many games in Kansas City, St. Louis and some World Series games. He grew up from a small boy playing ball almost all day with four friends who all became semi-pro players and traveled extensively to play ball on weekends.

Jay served as Mayor of Urich, was a member of the school board, a deacon of his Christian church and active in he Ingham-Morgan Legion Post No. 371 where he was a charter member and served as Chaplain for many years.

Jay is shown as Sammie Gardner in 1900 census where he is in Henry Co. with his sister Ada/3 and his mother Mollie Gardner/34 who is a servant, shown as married, altho his father doesn't appear to be in the area. Jay/Samuel and Ada Fay were transcribed as stepson and stepdau, but the original appears to read sev son, sev dau (under servant Maggie), to indicate they were her children. It is unclear if Jay was born as Samuel Jay/Jay Samuel, or if his adoptive parents renamed him "Jay".
He also had siblings Myrtle Belle and Luther William Gardner (who are also shown as servants in two other households 1900 in Henry Co.) and half brother George Wick. His mother indicated she had 5 of 6 children living as of 1900; name of his 6th sibling/half-sibling not known.

His WWI draft registration (at Hollywood, CA) is as Samuel Gardner (not Jay Markle), is signed Sam Gardner, and his DOB given as Mar 15 1896, not 1898. He was married as Jay Markle and his SSDI is as Jay Markle with DOB Mar 15 1898.
