Charles Wellington Lahr, who last August celebrated his sixty-second birthday anniversary, died Sunday morning at 11:20 at his home on North Second St. Mr. Lahr who had been as well as usual last week, Tuesday night attended a Masonic banquet in Harrisburg until Wednesday. During the night he became ill and came home on a morning train. He first developed pleurisy, followed by pneumonia. Saturday his condition was not thought to be alarming but Sunday morning a decided change was evident and despite all efforts his life could not be saved. He was a son of Jerome B. and Frances (Graham) Lahr and was born at Millerstown. His father was at one time Sheriff of Perry County and Mr. Lahr was his deputy. He also studied law at Bloomfield under the late William A. Sponsler. He attended the Millerstown Schools and the Bloomfield Academy, and for a short time attended the Medico Chirurgecal Hospital School of Optometry in Philadelphia. At a more mature age in Millerstown he was proprietor of a drug store and for a term served as postmaster in which dual camaacity he was succeeded by his father for many years. His brother D.A. Lahr, is now proprietor of the drug store. In 1896 he entered the Railway Mail Serivce and had neen empoyed in that capitity continuously since, having recently obtained an extention of two years, after being eligible to retire. Mr. Lahr was one of Newport's most interested and active citizens and had always taken an acitve interest in matters of general importance. At Millerstown he served as school director, town councilman, and active member of the fire company, as well as taking a keen interest in everything for the betterment of his home town. Coming to Newport 18 years ago his interest in affairs prevailing and he had served as school director and was an active member of the Newport Chamber of Commerce. He was first president of the present active and efficent fire company and to his wise guidance in a large measure is attributed the sturdiness of this organization. At the time of his death he was treasurer of the fire company. Mr. Lahr was a man of more than usual intelligence and was well read and informed on most subjects, being an orator of no mean ability. He was a memberof Newport Lodge, F&AM, the Calumet Club and the Perry Golf Club. His interest in things for the good of others led him to be director in the Perry County Agricultrue Society and each Fair time saw him acitve in the functions of his office. Thirty-nine years ago Tuesday he and Miss Sara Ellen Fickes, of this place, were married to which union one son, Max G. Lahr, was born. the wife and son survive with one grandchild, Maxine Lahr. Mr. and Mrs. Max G. Lahr and daughter live in Philadelphia. Two brothers also survive: Dorf A. Lahr, Millerstown, and J. Banks Lahr, High School Principal at Penn Argyl. A brother John and a sister Clara, first wife of the late Dr. E.E. Moore, of New Bloomfield, are dead. Mr. Lahr was a member of the Millerstown Methodist Episcopal Church and is interest in his home church caused him always to maintain his membership there. Rev. H.L. Jarret of Millerstown Church had charge of the funeral services, assisted by Rev. U.O.H. Kerchner of the Reformed church, who was a warm friend of the deceased. Services were at the home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with interment at the Riverview Cemetery, Millerstown. Pallbearers being fellow employees of the Railway Postal Service. At the cemetery Newport F&AM conducted a service.
