Friends always knew what to buy as a gift for Cecelia "Susie" Dolores Dupris. It was easy. They knew she had a Purple Passion, loving anything that was purple. They dearly loved Susie, so proud of her long black hair and her manicured fingernails.

Susie also dearly loved her friends, and she had many. Although she was a businesswoman in Eagle Butte and a representative of the Cheyenne River Agency BIA Branch of Social Service, Susie had many friends among the high school crowd and was like a big sister to many of the young girls.

She waged a determined battle with cancer but lost it on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, when she entered the Spirit World at the Rapid City Regional Hospital at the age of 45.

Born Aug. 20, 1962, to Everett and Delores Dupris in Eagle Butte, Susie attended Cheyenne-Eagle Butte schools and graduated in 1980. She attended National Business College in Rapid City and returned home to Eagle Butte to continue her education at the Cheyenne River Community College.

Susie was not an avid basketball fan until her sons began playing in high school and she thoroughly enjoyed watching them play. Just as her mother had, Susie had a deep love for her children.

Upon returning to Eagle Butte, Susie began working at the Cheyenne River Housing Authority. She worked there for about four years and then went to work for the Cheyenne River Agency BIA Branch.

"She wore many hats at work," her friends said when telling about her many different skills.

Susie then began a joint venture business with Cindy Peterson, starting J&P Video. If Susie weren't at her 8 to 5 job, you would generally find her at J&P.

When her grandchildren came along, Susie's adoration of them was very evident. She could always stop their tears and make them smile.

"While she loved everyone dearly, she wasn't hesitant to be stern if need be," friends said of her.

She spent a lot of time in Rapid City with her brothers and sisters and their families.

She leaves her special friend, Michael Jackson of Rapid City; children, Nick, Nathan and Nevin Joaquin, all of Eagle Butte; brothers and sisters, Richard (Carlette) Superior of Lynchburg, Va., Mona (Ken) Wilson of Wadsworth, Nev., Beverly (Richard) Bad Moccasin of Rapid City, Lavona (Robert) Radke of Rapid City, Ray (Tammy) Lesmeister of Sturgis, Esther Lesmeister of Rapid City, Frank (Rose) Dupris of Rapid City, John (Roxanne) Dupris of Rapid City and Fred (Norma) Dupris of Rapid City; and her grandchildren.

Her parents, Everett and Dolores Dupris, her two half-sisters, Lorraine and Anita, and grandparents Mae LaBlanc and Jonas Dupris preceded her in death.

Funeral services for Susie were Monday, Jan. 7, at the H.V. Johnston Cultural Center in Eagle Butte. Pastor Jedidiah Jezek and Dana Dupris officiated. Dana Dupris was emcee. Special music was provided by Lester Peneaux, Keal Whirlwind Horse, Yamni Uses The Knife, John McClain and other singers.

Casketbearers were Tom Hawk Eagle, Bryan Radke, Devon Dupris Fire Thunder, C.J. Dupris, Shawn Dupris, Troy Bad Moccasin, Ardi Jewett and Dana Cook.

Honorary bearers were all BIA employees, the CEB Class of 1980,and Susie's friends and relatives.

Burial was at the Eagle Butte City Cemetery under the direction of Oster Funeral Home of Mobridge.

An all night wake began Sunday evening, Jan. 6, at the cultural center, preceded by family and friends meeting at the 4-mile junction to follow in procession to the center.
