Jeanne Shibley Bell, 84, a leader in private day camping on Long Island, died in her home after a five-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Mrs. Bell, who founded the Shibley Day Camp in Freeport, was known as the "dean of day campong on Long Island," said Harvey Kulchin, the camp's director for 30 years and principal of Westbury High School.
Shibley was one of Long Island's first day camps when Mrs. Bell began it in 1930 with only a handful of children. Today, the 40-acre camp is the summer home of about 500 children, ages 3 to 14.
A professionally trained ballroom and ballet dancer, Mrs. Bell taught ballroom dancing at LaSalle Military Academy in Oakdale for 27 years, beginning in 1936. Students dedicated the 1961 academy yearbook to Mrs. Bell in celebration of her 25th year at the school.
During the 1940s, Mrs. Bell taught remedial dance to polio victims at the House of St. Giles, a former Garden City home under the auspices of the Episcopal Church.
In 1950, she began the Shibley School, a small, Roslyn-based nursery school and kindergarten. The school closed in 1965.
Mrs. Bell was also influential in founding the Long Island Association of Private Day Camps in the 1970s and was the first president and founder of the Nassau County Civic Ballet Association.
