While attending Texas Tech, Henry entered the Navy where he graduated from flight school at NAS Corpus Christi. He was stationed in England, where he met and married Stella Louise McCaslin in 1945. After World War II, they moved to Lubbuck where Henry graduated with a B.S. degree in Agricultural Education and began a teaching career in Maine. During the Korean Conflict he was recalled to the Navy where he made a career until his retirement as a Commander in 1969 at NAS Corpus Christi. He then worked at NAS Corpus Christi as Special Service Administrator until 1986.
During his Naval Career he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross with one gold star; Air Medal with two gold stars; American Campaign Medal; European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one gold star; World War II Victory Medal; Navy Reserve Medal; American Defense Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal with one gold star; and Korean War Service Medal.
He was one of the founding members of Charlie's Place, a local drug rehabilitation center.
He was preceded in death by wife, Stella, two brothers, Roy and Barney Stence, and his infant son, Michael George Stence. He was survived by two sons, one daughter; his brother, Shelby Ray Stence of Lexington, Texas; a sister Carrie Louise Wells of Morton, Texas; and one step-sister, Hazel Chestnutt of Casa Grade, Arizona.
