DIED: Monday, May 2, 2022
PLACE: Life Care Center of Bountiful
CAUSE: Cancer

BORN: December 22, 1941
PLACE: Boise, Idaho

PARENTS: James A. and Margaret (Henderson) Keyes

Named for his paternal grandfather, Karl was raised in Yakima, Washington. When he was just five years old, Karl's dad died of testicular cancer. His mom went to work as a school teacher to provide for him and kid sister, Karolyn Kraft.

In his youth, Karl was involved with the Boy Scouts and music. He played trumpet in school and lead guitar in his and Bill Helm's band called, "The Klassics". They played all over the area at school dances.

On Sunday, his mom dropped Karl and Karolyn off at the Presbyterian church where Karl joined the group, " Youth for Christ". Years later, while working at the Space Needle, his coworker introduced Karl to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and he was baptized.

After receiving his degree in Clinical Psychology with Music minor, Karl married Christy McKay in 1965. Her father, Ed was instrumental in assisting Karl when it came to finding work in construction. He and Christy had two children before divorcing.

While working at the Norris Music store in Caldwell, Idaho, Karl met the Cozette, the owner's daughter. The two hit it off and married in the Logan Temple on February 22, 1974. For the first while, he and Cozette moved a lot to accommodate his work before eventually settling in Bountiful, Utah where they raised their nine kids. He and Cozette moved to Roy, Utah in 2017.

Karl remained in construction and worked for several different companies. He even started a couple of his own, called Blue Sky Construction and Grandpa's Homes. He worked as a supervisor and helped oversee the building of twenty-seven church buildings between Alaska and Ohio, as well as two libraries and the Megaplex theatre in Centerville, Utah. He was working at Scenic Development Retirement Communities until just after his 80th birthday when cancer and other health issues caught up with him.

Karl had a variety of hobbies and interests, includong playing the piano by ear and gathering his kids around to sing everything from hymns to songs by Neil Diamond and The Carpenters. He then took his family to area rest homes and performed for the residents. Karl loved old cars and hot fudge sundaes from Dairy Queen. He was a handyman who helped his kids with their remodeling projects, fixing bikes, or whatever else they needed. He made green pancakes. He was a voluntary team sports coach and a tease. And he always had a handkerchief handy.
