Born in Winnipeg, Canada on December 30, 1936 to A. Douglass and Ruth B. Walker. He, along with his family, became U.S. Citizens in 1956. He graduated high school in Rye, NY and attended St. Lawrence University. Fred was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1962.
After many years employed by the Singer Sewing Co. in Rome, NY, Fred and family moved to Old Forge in 1973 where he owned and operated North Country Groceries until his retirement in 1988.
Fred took great pride in his service work to the community. He was a lifelong member of the OFFD. Former Truck Captain and served for many years as Fire Commissioner.
He was also a member of the Covey-Pashley American Legion Post #893, serving as Adjutant for many years.
Fred's days post retirement were happily spent with his dear friend and partner in crime, Hoot Gibson, fishing, tinkering, cruising on the barge and creating general merriment and mayhem at Daiker's. Halloween was his holiday…….
Fred was predeceased by his wife, Sue in 1979 and his brother inlaw Mark, in 2019. He is survived by his sister, Barbara of Calgary, Alberta; children, Margaret (Rod), Rick, and Danika; grandchildren, Kelsey and Paul (Sandra); and a great grand-daughter Willow; as well as his dear friends and family of his heart, James and Janet & Family. He was the fond uncle of a niece and two nephews and five grand-nieces and nephews all in Canada.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 21 at 11:00. To be followed by a Celebration of Life luncheon at Daikers. All are welcome.
