Hugh V. Matthews, son of I. V. Matthews, died at Salem, Oregon, December 29, 1899. Thus another of Wyoming County's sons passed away on the Pacific coast. Mr. Matthews lived from his birth in 1848 to 1869, in Wyoming. For several years he was engaged in farming at Pearl Creek and near Pike, N.Y., and for a little time in Concordia, Kansas. About 16 years ago he went to Salem, Oregon. He at once ranked among its first citizens, his early home life fitting him for a life of usefulness. A christian from boyhood, earnest, active and consistent wherever he was, and for many years, an elder in the Presbyterian churches where he was connected. Mr. Matthews was a son-in-law of Mrs. H. E. Cameron, of our village and a brother of Charles E. Matthews of Buffalo. It can be truly said, "The world is better for his living in it."
