Werner's childhood, until the age of 15, was spent in Latvia and near Hamburg, Germany. He arrived in the United States from the port of Bremerhaven, Germany in December 1951 with his mother and two sisters, aboard the General Leroy Eltinge, and disembarked in New York. The family settled in Kentucky.
He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a 1st Sergeant, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Camp Pendleton was the last of his many duty stations.
He later worked as a booking clerk for the San Diego County Sheriff's Department at the Central Jail and also at the Vista Station.
He was preceded in death by his children, Debra Anne and Michael Robert Zeiferts.
Werner enjoyed the finer things in life; and whatever he did, he did it with class. He loved classical music (he once dreamed of becoming a conductor), sailboats, powerful cars, and fine dining. Photography was a passion of his, and he took great pleasure in developing the prints in his own darkroom. He cared very deeply for animals (especially cats), and he usually had at least three very pampered felines in his home. He had a "green thumb", too; and always filled his patio or backyard with beautiful flowers.
Cooking was also a talent of his. Every meal he prepared was a special event, complete with all the finishing touches. Werner never did anything in a mediocre way. He had a dynamic personality, an adventurous soul, a romantic nature, and was a bit of a rogue. He will be missed and never forgotten by those of us who were fortunate enough to have been a part of his life.
