OBITUARY

Mary Creel passed away quietly and peacefully at 9:55 Wednesday morning at her home on Washington creek, after an illness of about 18 months.

Mary Elizabeth Creel, daughter of Silvester H. and Nancy C. Creel, was born in Douglas county, Kansas, April 14, 1870, and died at her birthplace, May 9, 1906, at the age of 36 years and 25 days. Almost her entire life was spent at the home of her childhood.

When 16 years of age Mary was converted and united with the Baptist church, where she has always labored earnestly and energetically for the advancement of the Master's cause. She was a woman of great breadth of character, liberal in her views and social in her disposition, yet strong in her convictions. No one who was acquainted with her character but loved and admired her.

She was a loving, affectionate daughter, sister, and friend; being a maiden sister she was counsellor and advisor to the younger ones, and having no family of her own, took personal interest in each of the other's affairs.

Throughout her illness, her suffering was intense. A year ago, the 19th of last January, Mary took her bed, suffering with a complication of several different diseases. Her death was expected momentarily by her family and by her friends, but her faith in God being so great, he miraculously restored her to us. She was relieved from suffering during the warm summer months, but in October a relapse came and since that time she has not known an unpainful moment. To her death had no fear. The summons found her ready and willing to go. She was so reconciled to death that she had planned every thing for her burial herself.

The funeral was held at the home on Friday, May 11th, just eleven months after her father's funeral, and the body was laid to rest beside him in the Pleasant Grove cemetery. The grave was beautifully lined with evergreens and snowballs. The sermon was preached by Rev. Hutchinson of the First Baptist church of Lawrence. Many beautiful flowers were brought by the many friends and relatives who were present to pay their last tribute of respect to her.

"Asleep, that last long sleep,
Never to waken more;
No more to suffer, no more to weep,
On this troubled storm-tossed shore
Hard it was to give her up
But God will help you drink the cup."
