Aterson was the youngest of the five known children of Judea Bradford and Thomas Barnett Allen and the last of their four sons. He lived his short life in Granville County, and is buried at the old Allen Homeplace, as is his next older brother, Joseph Alexander, who also died as a young child. His paternal grandparents and many other relatives are buried there.
