After graduation from Fort Towson High School John attended Foundry School in Durant, OK then on to Bremerton, Washington to work at the Naval Shipyard where his brother Sidney was working. He arrived shortly before Sidney received his draft papers and had to leave in about July. Soon after John went back to Oklahoma to help his dad in the fields. After the crops were harvested John volunteered for the Navy and was sent to Farragut, Idaho to boot camp where he contacted rheumatic Fever. He spent three months there in the hospital then on to Corona, Ca for another nine months in the hospital. He then received a medical discharge.

John then went to work for his Uncle Lawerence Rainey at Lawrence's plumbing shop where he learned the plumbing trade.

When John married Barbra Fox, Barbra had four children. John adopted them and raised them as his own. This made nine in the family as he already had five of his own.

In 1964 John was the stilts walking expert instructing his offspring but fell and broke his arm. He told the doctor he was ridding a bull calf and it bucked him off.

John married (1) Kathleen Elizabeth Wilkerson (2) Barbara Ann Reed (3) Helen Lucille Mc Kinley (4) Ida Mae Woodrum (5) Dixie Walkup.
