Marilyn Jane (Boothroyd) Murphy, 89, of Lafayette, IN, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Mulberry Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born on March 17, 1934 to the late George and Clara (Nelson) Boothroyd and was a lifelong resident of Tippecanoe County. Marilyn was a lover of music and enjoyed playing French Horn during her high school days. She was a 1952 graduate of Jefferson High School. She married her high school sweetheart, John Joseph Murphy, on September 27, 1952. He preceded her in death.

During her high school days, Marilyn worked at Barry's Camera Shop in downtown Lafayette, where she developed a love of photography and learned how to develop her own film, which she would do at her own home in her self-created darkroom. She also loved getting together with friends to play Euchre and Canasta, and she would play Bingo with her husband at various places into her adult years. Marilyn was also a member of the Moose Lodge and of the Eagles in Lafayette.

Marilyn was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church, never missing a service. She especially enjoyed attending the Christmas Eve services, having her family join her in the celebrations. Most recently, Marilyn was an active member of the 3B senior exercise group held at Bethany Presbyterian Church. She attended three times a week and would proudly share her activities and accomplishments. Other members describe her as the life and joy of the room and they all adored her immensely.

Marilyn and John created a beautiful family of three sons, four granddaughters, and nine great-grandchildren.

Marilyn truly was the matriarch of her family tree and was the foundation and glue that held everyone together. Marilyn's home was always the gathering point for holidays, birthdays and cookouts in the backyard. Her infamous sun-tea was a must-have on summer days swimming in the pool at her house. Marilyn's family was her pride and joy and she never missed a single school event for her granddaughters. She was involved in nearly every aspect of their lives, including helping raise them to be the successful adults that they are.

Marilyn worked for nearly 50 years as a lunch supervisor at Vinton Elementary school in the Lafayette School Corporation. All the students loved her and she became a grandmother to everyone there.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents; husband of 53 years; and son, Dean Murphy. She is survived by two sons; four granddaughters; and nine great-grandchildren.
