John was a son of David Geiger (1796-1869) and his second wife, Barbara Steinacker (1798-1846).
John married Louisa Weber on October 31, 1865. The couple lived on their farm in Wilmot Township, Ontario, just south of New Hamburg. They had five children:
- Allen (b. ~1866)
- Bertha (1867-1878)
- Jacob (1869-1878)
- John (1871-1932)
- Dillman (1873-1949)
At age 37, John died from typhus fever on September 27, 1878. His son, Jacob, died from diphtheria on the very same day.
