William Fred Lilly, Jr., age 73, of Sullivan Road, Glen Morgan, WV, went to be with the Lord on April 8, 2022. He passed away from COVID-19 after a hard-fought battle with lung disease that included surviving a double lung transplant.

Freddie was born at home in Maxwell Hill, Beckley, WV, on April 29, 1950. He was the son of the late William F. Lilly and Legathia C. Nelson.
He had many friends throughout Southern West Virginia and was known as a car enthusiast and regional drag racer who was inducted into the WV Drag Racers Hall of Fame in 2017. His passion was working on his El Caminos and restoring other vintage vehicles. A Mopar man through-and-through, he worked as an area auto parts manager for over thirty years, then was a private contractor transporting cars for local dealerships. He was known for his kindness to others, his laughter and his abiding sense of humor; his timing was always perfect when entertaining family and friends with jokes and pranks. He was also a member of Sunset Hills Missionary Baptist Church from 2005 to his passing.

If ever there was a man who looked on the bright side, it was Freddie.
Freddie's perseverance was an inspiration, as he was up and walking within three days of his July 2019 transplant at UVA hospital, earning a sign on his walker from the nurses labeled, "Fast Fred." On the fourth day following surgery, he danced with his devoted wife of thirty-eight years, Joyce, to "Colour My World" by Chicago, and there wasn't a dry eye in the onlooking crowd of nurses and staff. He loved camping at the Greenbrier River, taking long scenic drives through the country, dancing, attending the annual Clayton Lilly Family Reunion and local car shows, and watching his son, Scott Lilly, carry on his drag racing tradition. Most of all, he loved his family, and he was grateful for the nearly three years of extended life afforded to him through organ donation and an anonymous donor.

Mr. Lilly was preceded in death by a sister, Debbie Sue Cook.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Laxton Lilly; his three children, Lisa Shrewsberry, Johnathan Lilly, and Scotty Lilly; grandchildren, Madison McMillion, Jaimee Shrewsberry, Tucker Lilly, and Brian Lilly.

The family would like to also extend special thanks to the staff and doctors of the University of Virginia Transplant West Complex Center, UVA Fourth Floor West an ICU, PT/OT, Respiratory Care teams, and the UVA Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital. They went above and beyond to see that Fred and Joyce had the best care.
A Memorial Service will be held at Sunset Hills Missionary Baptist Church, Coal City, on Thursday, April 14, 2022, at 6 PM with friend and Associate Pastor Mike Davis officiating. Local musician Rick Lilly will perform during the remembrance service.

A memorial car show is being planned in his honor at a later date.
