Dr. French Succumbs to Long Illness
Longtime Teacher At Centenary Dies At Columbia, SC

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at London, KY, for Dr. Katherine Jackson French, 83, former Shreveport educator, who died Monday night at Columbia, SC, where she had resided for the past few years.
Dr. French, who had been ill for sometime, reportedly had suffered several heart attacks since living in a Columbia rest home.
The former educator was professor of English at Centenary College for 24 years and held the title of professor emeritus of English at the time of her death.
A native of Laurel County, KY, Dr. French joined the Centenary faculty in 1924 and retired in 1949. She received her A. B. and M. A. degrees from Ohio Wesleyan and a Ph.D. degree from Columbia University. She also studied at Yale University.
The widow of William F. French, Dr. French belonged to the First Methodist Church of Shreveport and taught in its Sunday school department. Her other memberships included Phi Beta Kappa, Modern Language Assn. and the Shakespeare Assn. of America. She was a founder and member of the Woman's Department Club. Dr. French authored several articles on Shakespeare. At the time of her retirement, Dr. Joe Mickle, Centenary College president and the board of trustees of the college both commended Dr. French for her efforts within the community. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Carl G. Tolbert of Columbia, S. C, and two grandchildren.

Katherine earned a doctorate from Columbia University in 1906, and was only the second woman to earn a PhD in English at that university. Katherine was also a member and became a leader of the non-profit American Association of University Women, which helps advocate for equity in education.
In 1909, she spent time in the mountain communities collecting about 60 Appalachian folk ballad songs from the Kentucky mountains. This collection she tried to have published the following year, unsuccessfully.
Although not in her lifetime, Katherine's ballad collection was published by Berea College, in Berea Kentucky in 2020.
