Miss Nellie Auten Dies Tuesday; Rites Held Today

Miss Nellie Mason Auten, 72, life long resident of Princeville, passed away at her home Tuesday after an illness of seven weeks. She had been in failing health for some time.
She was born March 2, 1875 at Princeville. She attended the old Princeville Academy and Wellesley college, graduating and the later in 1898 with the Bachelor of Arts degree. She later completed her graduate work at the University of Chicago, from which she was awarded her master's degree in sociology.
For many years, she taught school in Illinois and Wisconsin, until injuries in a coasting accident compelled her to give up her teaching duties. She spent some time in Colorado and Kansas in the betterment of her health. Her late years were spent at the family home in Princeville where she and another sister Miss Sarah Auten, cared for their father, who was bedfast for more than 20 years.
She was active in all phases of work of Presbyterian church and was an active member of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Lydia Armstrong of Urbana and Miss Sarah Auten of Princeville and five brothers, Benjamin C. Auten of Carterville, Mo.; Peter Auten of Urbana, Charles H. Auten of Glen Ellyn, H. Louis Auten of Denver Colo.; and Edward Auten, Jr., of Princeville.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p. m. Thursday in the Princeville Presbyterian church. Burial was in the Princeville cemetery.
