Youngest of sixteen children. Feb.-Aug. 1851 Jenks worked as a farmhand for several different employers in the Boston area, mostly chopping wood and hoeing fields. He documented his daily life, feelings and thoughts about the issues of the day in a journal that survives in the University of Delaware Library, Special Collections.
By 1857, he was employed as a clerk in Boston. During the American Civil War he served in the 7th Regiment of the Kansas Militia.
