Mel was born in Minot, North Dakota on November 20, 1939 to Edmund and Blanche (White) Suelzle. In 1947 his family moved to Yakima, Washington where he attended school graduating from Yakima High in 1957. His sister Wendy Jo joined the family in 1952

After graduation he attended Perry Technical School studying electronics. After graduation he began working for General Electric Company in Hanford, Washington. He served three years in the Washington National Guard.

In 1963 he married Genevieve Anderson and in 1964 they moved to Edmonds, Washington where he went to work for the John Fluke Company as an Instrument Technician. He retired in 2001 after serving several years as Service Manager. During his years at Fluke he traveled all over the world.

After retirement he was very involved in serving in various endeavors at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Edmonds. He also built radio-controlled model boats and won many awards for his accomplishments. He loved playing with the boats and helping his club-member friends when they had problems, as his electronics background gave him that ability.

Mel loved his children, Steven, Deborah, and Diane and his eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren very much and his proudest moments were when they accomplished their dreams.

His best buddy was his dog, Boomer
