Ensign M. C. Kirby, USNR, was designated Naval Aviator #6108 in 1939. Entered active service via the pre-war Aviation Cadet (AVCAD) program.

Ensign Kirby lost his life when his aircraft crashed and sank while operating from the aircraft carrier U.S.S. RANGER (CV-4), off the Atlantic Coast, during a failed landing attempt.
