Betty Louise Johnson Chaffin and her husband Homer Leon Chaffin were long time residents of Escondido, and members of the Greatest Generation, died of natural causes a little over sixteen months apart. They met at a USO dance in San Diego while Leon was serving on the USS Mercy hospital ship until 1945. In 1946, they married and moved to Escondido, where they raised their three sons. Betty began her teaching career in 1964. She taught at Glenview Elementary School after graduating from San Diego State University. Betty died after Homer. She was survived by their three sons, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Per their request, their ashes are to be spread together at sea, off Point Loma, San Diego.
