There are many family stories about "Jack" Bishop that have been posted on family forums and family trees; some are stories handed down through the families and some through records. Some of the stories are the same and others slightly different. He also went by John Hall after moving to Oregon
All seem to agree:

• 1839-1840, Jack was born in Carter County, Tennessee to John "David" Bishop, b. about 1800, in Ireland and Margaret Rebecca Carriger, b. about 1812 in Carter County Tennessee. John and Margaret married in 1827 (TN State Marriages Record).
• 1860, the family moved to Missouri.
• 1862 Apr-1863 Feb Jack joined Quantrill's Raiders at the beginning of the Civil War.
• 1863-1864 he was captured by the Federals, joined either Co B, 6th KS Cav or 12th Cav then deserted at the end of Feb 1863--rejoined Quantrill until the end of the war, Apr 1864.
• 1863, took part in the raid on Lawrence, Kansas in Aug 1863
• Between the end of war, he went to either Texas or Mexico and then to Tennessee
• 1866, Jack married Martha (Maggie) Hull in Carter Co, TN
• 1867-1871, rode with Jesse James sometime
• 1871, visited his brother Samuel Bishop and was involved in mining with him
• 1875, he shot Jacob Snider over a claim disagreement in Georgetown, Colorado
• Jack went to Sonoma, California and lived with his brother T.C. Bishop
• 1879 he received a letter from Jesse James while at the Rest Ranch, a refuge in the Pecos River County used by the James' families, mentioned in a Jesse James press release in 1880, living with his family in Josephine County, Oregon after changing names to John and Mattie Hall who died in Oregon in 1914.

• "Was one of Quantrill's best scouts with "will of iron, he was a cool desperate man" Bishop was at Lawrence--Baxter Springs, he was listed as the first to shoot and kill a Union soldier.
• 1864 Nov, went to Texas with George Shepherd, Nov 1864
• 1865 Apr, Bishop was with Archie Clements in Kingsville raid--forming an advance of David Poole, John Poole, John Maupin, Jack Bishop, Theo Castle, Jesse James and Press Webb, killing five militiamen in one squad, ten in another, twenty total.
• 1865 May, Bishop in meeting of Guerrillas discussing surrender.
• 1869, moved to Colorado.
• 1871, March, Georgetown, MO, mentioned in local paper.
• 1875, while in Sonoma Co, CA, (hiding after he killed Jacob Snider in Georgetown in 1875) with brother Carter Bishop--photos of Mrs. Jackson Bishop, daughter Alice and son George, no photos of Jack, 1880 census, Josephine County, Or, shows John, wife Mattie, several children including daughter Alice and son George--Birth information consistent with him being Jack.
• 1899 September, attended Quantrill's Men's Reunion on at Blue Springs, MO
