Green-wood Cemetery's prospects for survival were greatly helped by Joseph A. Perry. In 1842, when Green-wood was still struggling to survive, Perry, Henry E. Pierrepont's son-in-law, gave up his business career to take over management of of the cemetery. During the first year of his stewardship, twenty tombs were constructed and 162 interments occurred. In the years before his death in 1881, Perry guided the cemetery as it grew from 175 to 460 acres, while improving its facilities and beautifying its grounds. On Perry's monument, the following inscription is carved: "The Trustees of the Green-Wood Cemetery have erected this monument in recognition of the eminent services of Joseph Alfred Perry, who, for more than forty years, and until his death, was its faithful and efficient comptroller. To Mr. Perry's untiring energy, sound judgement, and personal care, the proprietors of Green-Wood Cemetery are chiefly indebted for the development of the sacred City of the Dead." Joseph Perry's grave is directly facing the landmarked main gate at 25th street.
