The son of Colonel John and Juliet Jeffries Pollard attened Stevensville Academy. He then graduated Columbian College in 1860. He did his postgraduate work in Theology at Columbian under the President of the College, George Samson. He attended the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln. He was ordained in 1861 at Mattaponi Church in King and Queen. In 1867 he was awarded his Master's degree by Columbian College. He was Vice-President of the Southern Baptist Association. He received the D.D. degree from Columbian in 1877. He was a trustee of Richmond College. From 1886 to 1901 he held the Chair of English there.
