"Mrs. Margie Alexander, Postmaster of Port Republic Post Office since August of 1967, is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, although she says she would rather be identified as being a native Virginian.
She was born the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hensley and her mother still lives on Route 3, Elkton. Mrs. Alexander now lives with her husband, Gordon, on one of their three small farms just outside of Port Republic. Mr. Alexander is engaged in the beef cattle business while his wife sees that the mail goes through.
Mrs. Alexander graduated from Elkton High School and then took a postgraduate commercial course before entering the world of business. She found only jobs in manufacturing open to her and she soon decided that this was not the line of work she wished to pursue, so she went to Harrisonburg Business College and New York Institute of Finance. This education led her into the stock brokerage business.
After she went with Branch Cabell in the Waynesboro office, they soon recognized her ability and offered her a position as broker and, following the necessary training and education, she became one of 6,000 lady stock brokers in the United States.
An opportunity to become Postmaster was opened to her in 1967, and she gave up her career in the stock market.
Mrs. Alexander is a member of Port Republic United Methodist Church and has been affiliated with the Waynesboro Business and Professional Women's Club. She is also a member of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States and the Virginia chapter, and has served as reporter for the Seventh District in the publication, "The Virginia Postmaster."
