Professional football and basketball player. After graduating from high school in Dublin, Texas, James Winfred Spruill went to Rice University. He served in the Army during World War II. He played two years with the Baltimore Colts in 1948 and 1949 in the All America Football Conference. He was a 225-pound offensive tackle. He also played one game in 1948 with the Indianapolis Jets in the Basketball Association of America, the precursor to the NBA. He was a high school coach for 28 years.
