Daughter of William Ward Smail and Mary Lydia Peters

Married Daryl Gray Ayers 31 May 1948 Denton, Fergus, MT
3 children

Ora Maxine Ayers, 91, passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022. Ora and twin brother Ollie were born May 31, 1930, in Denton to Ward and Mary Smail; the fourth and fifth children of eight.

Ora and Daryl Ayers were married May 31, 1948, the day after Ora graduated high school and started their lifelong farming adventure. Not only was Ora head cook and bottle washer, but she could grind gears with the best of them in the harvest field. She was an active bowler, Cub Scout leader, ceramic club member, and pinochle club member.

In her spare time, Ora raised two very active boys. From seamstress to doctor, nurse to bus driver, activities director to disciplinarian and referee; mom was always a soft shoulder. Ora was very involved in The Order of Eastern Star, being appointed Montana's Grand Representative to the states of Colorado and New Jersey.

Ora enjoyed gardening, canning, camping and fishing. Most of all, during their retirement, Ora and Daryl loved being "snowbirds" going down to Yuma, Ariz., to make new friends and enjoy all of their old friends.

Survivors include sons, Bill (Tracy) Ayers of Spokane, Wash., and Jerry (Fran) Ayers of Denton; grandchildren, Shannon (Rich) McGillis of Maineville, Ohio, Colin (Jesika) Ayers of Denton, and Balinda Self of Lewistown; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Ora is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Daryl; son, Duane; grandson, Bryan Ayers; parents, Ward and Mary Smail; and all seven of her brothers and sisters.

Funeral services for Ora will be held at the Denton United Methodist Church on Friday, Feb. 11, at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow at the Denton Town Hall. Inurnment will be at the Hillcrest Cemetery. Memorials are requested to the Denton Ambulance Fund or to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Arrangements are under the care of Creel Funeral Home. Ora's family and friends can share memories and condolences at www.creelfuneralhome.com.
