HIT-RUN DRIVER KILLS J. EMMERT EARLY THURSDAY
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Victim Struck By Car While On HIs Way Home
____________________________________________
J. J. Emmert, 63, long time resident of this city, was fatally injured in an accident which occurred about 12:30 o'clock this morning, when he was struck by a hit and run driver at the intersection of Sixth Avenue and 14h street while proceeding home.

There were no eye witnesses to the accident but it is presumed that Mr. Emmert was crossing the street when he was struck by a car traveling south on highway 61 (now know as 6th Avenue).

Another motorist found Mr. Emmert lying on the paving and stopped and summoned assistance. An ambulance was called and Mr. Emmert was being rushed to Clinton hospital but he died enroute. The body was taken the the McGinnis Funeral home to be prepared for burial. Funeral services are to be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Funeral Home with the Rev. R. C. Jerrell in charge.

Following the accident the local police and highway patrolmen made a diligent search about the scene of the accident for possible clues which will lead to the arrest of the hit-and-run driver. It is understood some evidence has been found which may lead to the apprehension of the guilty driver.

Mr. Emmert was born in DeWitt 63 years ago. For a number of years he lived in Davenport, later returning to DeWitt where he worked at his trade of plasterer and cement finisher for a number of years. He was married but his wife died in 1928. One son, Russell, survives, as well as a brother, E. A. Emmert of this city and a sister, Mrs. F. E. Thompson living in Milan, IL.
