Shirley A. Conklin, 70, 1055 N. Prairie St., died at 12:20 a.m. Jan. 2, 2008, in her home.

Mrs. Conklin spent one year at William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Va. She moved to Frankfort in 1966. She worked for attorney Robert Bracken for 17 1/2 years, as an aide at Wesley Manor for three years and at the Hoosier Book & Bible Store for 1 1/2 years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She was a former church clerk and former member of the music board, the board of deacons and the board of education. She also was a member of the Moose, Beta Sigma Phi, and past president of Women's Aglow. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a woman who loved life and her Lord.

She was born July 5, 1937, in Portsmouth, Va., to William Jennings and Helen H. Butler Arnett. She married Ronald Ray Hixson in 1957, and they divorced. She married Auburn E. "Bud" Conklin on Aug. 24, 1963, in Elizabeth City, N.C., and he survives.

Also surviving are five daughters, Terri (James) Laflen and Rebecca "Becky" Alqueszada, both of Frankfort, Alisa Van Horn, Pamela (Linwood) Lewis and Ruth (Michael) Chappell of Chesapeake, Va.; one son, Auburn "Buddy" (Nancy) Conklin Jr. of Frankfort; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
