Orville Matteson, of pioneer family
GASTON - Open air cryptside services were held Friday for Orville L. Matteson, 82, Gaston.
Mr. Matteson died March 19, 1990, at Camelot Care Center in Forest Grove after a long illness.
David E. Matteson officiated at the Friday services at the Mountain View Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Forest Grove. Vault entombment in the mausoleum followed.
Mr. Matteson was born March 28, 1907, on the Matteson family homestead in Gaston, a son of Ernest Wilmer and Georgia May Thomas Matteson.
He was a grandson of Alveris Matteson, who came west from Illinois in 1852 and settled a homestead on the present site of the City of Gaston. He later sold the property and took a homestead on a section of land south of Gaston overlooking Wapato Lake. Matteson Road in Gaston was named after the Matteson family.
On Oct. 20, 1934, he married Ruth Cummings in Vancouver, Wash., and they lived in Gaston. She died Oct. 23, 1969 in Portland.
Mr. Matteson worked as a maintenance mechanic at Stimson Lumber Company in Gaston for 20 years. He retired in 1973.
Among his special interests were woodworking and building furniture.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard C. and Kay Matteson, Gaston, and David E. Matteson, LaGrande; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara J. and Mike Reynolds, valdez, Alaska; and seven grandchildren.
