Susannah/Susan was the third of 12 children (2 sons, 10 daughters) born to James H. Baker and wife Catharine "Kate" Keeler in Sevier County, TN. Her father was a Union supporter and her future husband James H. Sims fought for the Union before their marriage. He will receive a Union pension and after his death Susannah re-applies for the widow's pension.

Susannah and James H. Sims married 1 Sep 1867, Sevier County, TN, and will have 10 children. Their children were: William James Blackburn, John C., George Gates, Walter Lafette, Dicie Emaline Williams, Louisa Jane "Lou" Love, Charles Bruce, Roten Creed Boyer, Henry Lavator, and Julia A. Sims. Only Julia predeceases either parent.

No gravestone has been found and her death certificate is blank as to her burial site. Presumably she is buried in Alder Branch Baptist Cemetery, same as her husband and at least one daughter.

According to the census records, Susannah could not read or write. On the 22 Apr 1910 Sevier County, TN census she appears with her husband and youngest son, Henry Lavator Sims, shown being in her first marriage of 43 years and the mother of 10 children, 9 living. Both her father and her husband die the same year, 1910.
