Sydney was born June 20, 1933 to Sid and Opal Gamblin in Burkburnett, Texas, and she graduated from the Burkburnett Public Schools in 1950. She received her Bachelor's Degree with a major in secondary education from Texas Tech University. Sydney's lifelong dream was to become a professional opera singer; however, that pursuit changed when she married Billy Earl Askins on February 21, 1954. At that time, Billy was on active duty with the U.S. Air Force stationed at Scott AFB, Illinois, and their first home was in O'Fallon, Illinois. Then, Billy was reassigned to Korea, and Sydney returned to Burkburnett where she took a teaching position in the local high school teaching vocal music and business courses. While teaching in Burkburnett, she also had the opportunity to continue with her love to sing as she often performed at countless weddings, funerals, plays and local community activities. In 1966, Sydney and Billy moved from Burkburnett to Ft Worth where she accepted a teaching position at Poly Tech High School and Billy took a position at R.L. Pascal High School. When Billy accepted a teaching position at Texas Tech University, they moved to Lubbock in 1967. During the period of 1967-1988, Sydney had various teaching positions in the Lubbock Public Schools including Monterey High School, Dunbar High School and Coronado High School where she retired as Business Coordinator in 1988. After retirement from teaching for 28 years, her major interest shifted to their mountain home in Angel Fire, New Mexico where, along with Billy Earl, enjoyed visitations from family and friend, music from Angel Fire, hiking, watching the wild animals, riding the golf cart with Billy, and entertaining new found mountain friends. Sydney had a significant life as she had a passion for teaching which impacted the future lives of many of her students. Sydney was a devout Christian and a member of the Samaritan Class at the First Baptist in Lubbock. Also, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and sister. Among her many attributes, she will be fondly remembered for her most pleasant smiles, sharing, little surprises, her "independency", being a good friend, and a strong belief in righteousness and an strong unacceptance of mediocrity. Sydney was preceded in death by both of her parents and her sister, Mary Frances Northcott. Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Billy Earl; son, Dewayne Askins and wife Tana; a niece, Nancy Arden of Lubbock; two granddaughters, Trista Bailey and husband Brandon of Abilene and Danya Weinheimer and husband Zane of Austin' and four great grandchildren, Jemma, Kolson and Boone Bailey and Brook Billy Weinheimer; and many special cousins in Texas, Tennessee, and New Mexico.
