HERB BALLENTINE, 83, of Memphis died Thursday, January 3, 2008, at Methodist Hospital North. He was retired from Memphis Light Gas & Water in 1973, and the University of Tennessee in 1989, was a veteran of the U.S. Navy from October, 1942, until January, 1946, where he was an Aviation Ordinance First Class. He received two permanent citations, an Air Medal and a Distinguished Flying Cross with a Gold Star. He served throughout World War II as the nose turret gunner in a PB4Y2 on anti-submarine patrol in the Bay of Biscay and the Azores, flying more than 50 missions over Atlantic shipping lanes. Mr. Ballentine was inducted into the Memphis Amateur Sports Hall of Fame in 1999, for achievement in Fast-Pitch Softball and was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Mr. Ballentine is survived by his wife of 25 years, Patsy Ballentine; daughters, Patricia (Gary) Moss of Indianapolis, IN. and Pamela (Andy) Cobb of Memphis; son, Mike (Tina) Ballentine of Columbia, TN; four stepchildren, Trina, Mary, Rhonda and Randy Jones; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Monday, January 7 at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar. A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, January 8 at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be sent to the Veterans Administration Hospital-University of Tennessee in Memphis.
